Where are the chiefs today who dance the dance of peace? Where are the leaders who fast and pray for a vision to help their people? I cannot hear the valley ring with the songs of the ancestors, songs of peace, songs of spirit and teaching. These things are culture, what we need to bring back to our spirit to bring back the truth, strength, and beauty of our ancestors. I long to see the Peace Dance as their singers shake the mountains and the chiefs shake the eagle down of peace.
The time has come to humble ourselves and ask our neighbors to the south to teach us our old ways. They have taught me; I know these dances, and I feel the strength and truth of these beautiful ways.
The winter solstice is a time of change, it is the time when great feasts were held and the people celebrated life. It is possible to bring back the beautiful ways; we must humble ourselves and pray. The Creator and spirits of our ancestors will show us the way.

About the artist
Roy Henry Vickers (1946) is an accomplished First Nations artist raised at the northwest coast of British Columbia, Canada. Roy is a past president of the Northwest Coast Indians Artist’s Guild. He is currently living in Hazelton, Canada, BC. Roy was raised in Kitkatla, Hazelton and Victoria. You may say he has returned to his roots. The Village of Hazelton is a small town located at the junction of the Bulkley and Skeena Rivers, nestled at the foot of Stigyooden (Roche de Boule Mountain).
